Letter to ESC SC and WG Chairpersons, Oct 2002

To: the ESC WG Chairpersons

Dear Colleagues,

as you know, the new ESC Subcommission G "Rapid Intervention Field Investigation Teams" was established at the last ESC conference in Genoa in September this year.

The scope of the new SC is to organise FITESC team/s, that would take care of fast organisation of (macroseismic and other) seismological data collection in the case of damaging earthquakes in Europe and the Mediterranean. All the data gathered would be made available in the shortest possible time; not just the evaluations but all the raw data. They would be placed on the Internet, through either or both of the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre and the ESC.

At the moment, only the Working Group "Macroseismology" has made extensive preparations in order to be able to start working as the part of FITESC in the near future. During the conference in Genoa, some other WGs expressed their interest in following the same path.

We hereby invite all ESC Working Groups to join the efforts of SC-G and help broadening the spectrum of field activities of future team/s.
